Great Places To Visit This Season

By on April 25, 2019

Just because cherry blossoms are gone doesn’t mean the fun is, too.

In fact,  in many parts of Japan  the best has just begun. Fragrant amethyst, purple and white blossoms are the stars of the season.

The 10-day Golden Week break in Japan makes for a good reason to hop on the shinkansen to visit the much-raved-about Kawachi Fuji En (Kawachi Wisteria Garden). See breathtaking views of the dierent wisteria varieties in colours and shades at its aromatic walkway. Take sel␣es with spectacular 150 plants and 20 dierent species of the ␣owering vine. A 5-hour bullet train trip from Tokyo with children in tow might be too long a ride but the experience is worth the trip.

If you can’t travel far to see the Kawachi Fuji Gardens, try the Ashikaga Flower Park, a 94,000-square meter sprawling garden in Tochigi prefecture. Also called the ‘purple garden’, the park is surrounded by picturesque views of 150-year old purple wisteria (Fujii no hana) trees that feel like being in a ␣ower paradise. Purple is not the only colour you’ll see. Expect to see pale red, white and yellow ␣owers too. Cited by international media as one of the top 10 dream destinations in Japan, Ashikaga Flower Park is just a 2- hour train ride from Shinjuku.

The most impressive poppy ␣eld in Japan is found at the Chichibu Highland Ranch overlooking splendid hills and luscious trees. The 15 million bright red poppies spread over 5 hectares of land is possibly one of the most refreshing sights to see at this time of the year. Flowering period of poppies is generally from mid May until early June but, in order to make the long train ride worthwhile, it’s best to go during the Poppy festival.

Children, before reaching age 10, must be exposed to what goes on at a farm. Mother Farm is the place to do just that. At the farm, there is always something for kids to do, whether that involves interacting with merrily hopping bunnies, playing with guinea pigs or rolling around the mustard ␣flower field. You can bet that a trip here is a welcome distraction from too much computer or device use. Don’t go home without trying their ice cream made from Mother Farm’s celebrity cows. With April temperatures feeling like May, expect more ␣owers to bloom earlier than usual. Mother Farm is located in Chiba.

It’s official. Japan has announced that nemophilas also known as baby blue eyes will be in full bloom from April 24 until May 3, a week later than last year. The best place for nemophila viewing in Japan is at Ibaraki’s Hitachi Seaside Park where a bed of picturesque nemophilas share spotlight with tulips and narcissuses in a 190-hectare space. If you have to bathe in the goodness of the ␣ower season, this has got to be your top choice.

Put on your best walking shoes because a hike at this expansive 180-hectare Showa Kinen National Park in Tachikawa is not entirely a ‘walk in the park’. Home to stunning nemophilas and yellow and pink tulips at this time of year, you will also find the park’s well-kept Japanese gardens with ponds, uplifting. Showa Kinen is also home to a Bonsai museum and many other interesting sights to see. So dust o your mats and pack obentos when you visit. If you get tired from all the walking, use the slow moving park carts to take you for a tour.
