In Nim’s Island, we find Jodie Foster revealing a lighter side, as a clumsy, reclusive author of adventure novels, drawn into a real-life adventure of her own with one of her young fans. “I’m not always serious,” she professes. Foster has often played   heroic characters with strong, protective qualities. “I’m drawn to that maternal relationship,” states the mother of two boys, who accompanied her on a recent trip to Japan. Foster claims that aside from her childhood work, this is the first movie of hers that they’ve seen. According to her, they loved the movie – especially seeing their mother act silly. “My kids have never been to a premiere before [this film’s]. They got to be on set. It was an eye-opening experience from them!” Besides her sons, Foster has a family outside of the home too. “The world of movie-making is the one family I’ve known my whole life, so I have some sentimental feelings about that,” she says of her colleagues both on the screen and off, of which young Abigail Breslin [her young co-star] is a part. The two-time Academy Award winner shared her acting secrets with the rising starlet: “Before I start a movie, I try and do something that feels like a very big accomplishment. It can be something very small. Then, I feel like I can do anything.”
