Fill your children’s summer break with meaningful and fun activities.

By on March 1, 2024

For many children, summer vacation is a time to take a break from crying over homework.

They will want to do things freely on their own. The trouble with giving children full autonomy during the summer break is that their idea of “fun” might involve prolonged use of device or staying up late with friends than parents have time to supervise. No matter how appealing that could be to your children, smart parents know that filling up their children’s idle time with structured activities is what ultimately supports their development.

It could be anything from exploring new interests and interacting with new friends to honing their skills. One of the most proven ways to do just that is signing them up for summer classes with programs appropriately matched to children’s age and interests. The needs of a primary schooler will differ from what is developmentally appropriate for one in an upper grade level.

SCHOOLS KNOW BEST

A known IB school in Tokyo, Aoba-Japan International School (AJIS) has an excellent summer program designed for children aged 4 – 18. Its campuses in Bunkyo, Nerima and Meguro wards are all set to welcome children of all nationalities from different corners of the city.

Its 2024 summer program which runs every 5 days between June 17 and Aug. 9, is divided into two themes: IB-based program ( English, Japanese, Music and Sports with fun pool time included) where children are encouraged to think critically in ways that  challenge their developing minds; Hands-on activity, an experiential learning opportunity exposing children to different situations to future-proof their skills.

Finding a creative outlet for children to express their artistic side can have a myriad of advantages. When children are given an opportunity to explore their creative side, it enhances their cognitive and social skills helping them grow in confidence. These are essential components of a musical theatre exercise being offered to children from grades 1 to 11 this summer at Aoba-Japan International School.

The Musical Theatre camp under the tutelage of ballerina and ballet instructor Nami Holderman, award-winning symphony conductor Dr.Kensuke Hakoda, together with Japan Performer’s Competition’s first place winner and pianist Mizuho Inagawa, provides a platform for children to express their creativity through elements of music, dance, and acting.

Unlike in a usual school setting where children are graded, Aoba Japan International School’s summer program is conducted in a relaxed environment where all activities are centered on just fun and learning.

The school also has a boot camp-style  “GO School Program” offered outside of the summer program hours designed for children that need help with their English skills.
