Public Daycare application to switch from paper to online

By on February 6, 2024

Parents in Japan still face daunting wait lists for public daycare. Some experience difficulty in taking time off work significantly impacting parents’ ability to meet daycare application deadlines.

But that will change when Public Daycare application switches from paper to digital by around October 25 for use by parents seeking to get a slot for their child by April 2026. This was announced by Japan’s Children and Families Agency yesterday.

This means that parents will no longer need to be physically present at their local ward and schools to complete an application by just using a private-sector app. The planned automation will not only save parents a trip but also accelerate the speed by which local governments process application and admission procedures.

Some local municipalities have initiated online procedures ahead of the others that rely on telephone and face-to-face application.
