Japan embraces digital option to report a child birth

By on January 31, 2024

Many countries across the world have rolled out digital registration to serve a wide range of functions and Japan is no different.

Parents will breath a sigh of relief as Japan is set to make children’s birth registrations and certificate issuance by local municipalities, digitally.

This will be possible through the Mynaportal website for holders of My Number personal identification cards.

The move is aimed at controlling paperwork burdens on the public as well as reducing administrative burden on municipalities. In the present system, information reported is manually entered by municipalities into the family registry.

The government plans to introduce a provisional system for online birth registration by summer of this year with selected areas ahead of others. The online registration system should be working in full scale across Japan by 2026 at the earliest.

The Japanese government will go into the necessary renovations on the system and revise the rules that will allow birth reports to be submitted through the Mynaportal site.

Japan’s current family registration law requires parents to submit to municipalities a notification of child birth  and certificates no later than 14 days after the birth of a child.
