By on November 23, 2023

Japan fell 7 places from last year’s 80th ranking in English proficiency score this year. The 2023 Education First (EF) English Proficiency Index (EFI)  is a survey released by the Swiss international education company Education First, which measures the English proficiency of people in non-English speaking countries with emphasis on proficiency trends globally. It was in 2011 when EF began publishing the survey results yearly.

In 2022, Japan dropped two places more from 78th to 80th under the ‘Low Proficiency’ group from among 112 countries. South Korea placed forty-ninth and China eighty-second in the same group.

Ten of the twelve countries with the highest English proficiency were in Europe with only one in Asia and the other in Africa.

The 2023 EPI results were from 2.2 million test takers in 113 countries who took the EF SET English tests in 2022.

Among Asian countries, Singapore placed second, the Philippines twentieth, Malaysia twenty-fifth, and Hong Kong twenty-ninth under the High Proficiency group.
