Biota of the Imperial Palace

As children begin their forays into the natural world, we can encourage them to know and understand the creatures living in Japan.

A good place to start is the Meiji Yasuda Village Marunouchi gallery in Tokyo’s Chiyoda ward where animals and plant specimens that live in the Imperial Palace are currently on exhibit until November 5, 2023.

Around 5,900 kinds of creatures have reportedly been found at the Imperial Palace grounds since a series of large-scale biological surveys began in 1996 at the behest of then Emperor Akihito, now the Emperor Emeritus.

The exhibit reveals how biofacies or fossilized remains of organisms found within sedimentary rocks encircled by moats have changed over time. The number of goshawks or predatory birds coming to build nests has gone up while that of jungle crows has declined. More lichen types have become noticeable as a result of cleaner air.

The research by the retired emperor of Japan reveals too that blue beetles were what raccoon dogs that live in the Imperial Palace feed on. See specimens of raccoon dog as well as one of the largest soft-shelled turtles in Japan, various insects like blue beetles and dragonflies.

The exhibition runs from October 16 until November 5, 2003
