Japan’s first large-scale cubism exhibition in 50 years

By on October 3, 2023

Around 140 of the world’s famous artworks (paintings, African sculptures, drawings, prints, film and documents) by 40 influential artists that defined Cubism will be shown to the public at the National Museum of Western Art from October 3, 2023 until January 28, 2024.

Cubism is an avant-garde art movement that shaped the visual arts style of the 20th century. The Cubist style rejected techniques and theories that were traditional – as in art should copy nature. Instead, Cubist painters placed emphasis on the flat, two-dimensional surface of the picture plane, presenting what became a new reality – expression through radically fragmented objects.
