Ukiyo-e works of Katsushika Oi on exhibit at the Ota Memorial Museum of Art

By on September 5, 2023

Japan in the 17th century produced great artists of Ukiyo-e,  a genre of Nippon art that became popular through to the 19th century.

One such artist was Katsushika Oi, the daughter of Hokusai Katsushika best known for the woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

A dozen of Oi’s works known to this day do not have the same shading expression and brushing techniques as her father’s artworks.  Oi had mastered the use of color similar to Western paintings as showcased in the above masterpiece Display room in Yoshiwara at Night, a depiction of Japan’s old brothel quarters.

See to appreciate more of her celebrated works at the Ota Memorial Museum from November 1 until 26, 2023.
