Tokyo Governor: Surge in flu case counts could lead to outbreak in the next four weeks.

According to Japan’s health ministry, the number of new flu cases reported by about 5,000 medical institutions across Japan in the week to Sunday was 34,665, a 1.57 times increase compared to the previous week.

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko alerts the public on Friday to the high number of cases reported by Tokyo medical institutions. This, she warns, may mean it is likely that a flu outbreak could occur within the next four weeks.

The current situation can be attributed to the weakening of people’s immune systems after COVID-19 prevention measures also curbed flu infections, and to recent rises in domestic and international travel.

By prefecture, the average number was highest in Okinawa, at 20.85, and also above 10 in Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Tokushima, Ehime and Saga. Only three prefectures–Aomori, Iwate and Yamagata–had figures below 1, the threshold for an outbreak

Koike reminds the public to take appropriate measures against both the flu and COVID-19 like washing their hands and making sure they are in rooms with enough ventilation.
