Junior high school students underperform in English oral test

By on August 2, 2023

At Japan’s nationwide English-speaking test, third year junior high school students got only 12.4 percent of the questions right while 60 percent of students scored zero.

The result of the National Assessment of Academic Ability conducted in April was announced on July 31. It covered Japanese, mathematics and English subjects.

“The questions may have been difficult because their settings were complicated,” the ministry said.

The annual achievement exams were taken by a total of about 1.9 million junior high school third graders and elementary school sixth graders at 28,523 public and private schools across the country.
