The next generation folding bike that fits in a backpack will be available in Japan this month.

As of 2020, around 737.74 thousand electric bicycles were sold in Japan. The number has steadily increased by almost 40 thousand units the following year.

Despite the 200,000-yen-plus price tag of most electric bikes in Japan, it has become increasingly popular all over the city. In recent years, on-the-go parents have come to rely increasingly on the practicality of e-bikes when running errands. E-bike riders’ concerns often include however, battery capacity and size.

These are two areas where the new ‘smacircle S1M’ delivers.

The time it takes to fully charge the battery is 3.5 hours.

Don’t underestimate its size though. While it may appear fragile, the frame is mostly made of carbon fiber capable of supporting up to 100 kgs.

Unlike most alternatives on the market, it’s clearly an option for on-the-go people who could fit the S1 in a dedicated backpack or portable bag to carry in cars or trains.

The smacircle S1M falls under the ‘small moped’ category, a new grouping that came into effect from July 1, 2023.  This means that riders of the smacircle S1M –

  •  must be at least 16 years old to drive but no driver’s license is required.
  •  are requested to make an effort in wearing a helmet for reasons of safety but not mandatory
  • can use public roads, drive on bicycle traffic zones, bicycle paths, etc.

The smacircle S1M will be available in Japan starting July 31, 2023. The retail price is set at 242,000 yen including tax.
