Schools with few faculties of science are reportedly not keeping up with the goals of the National Institution for Academic Degrees and Quality Enhancement of Higher Education.

In keeping with its goal of encouraging educational institutions for a shift to science-related fields of study, Japan selected 106 universities and five technical colleges eligible for financial support to help nurture learners in digital, decarbonization and other high-growth fields.

The program which has an allocated budget of some 300 billion yen is primarily targeted at private universities with fewer science facilities than others.  Around 2 billion yen will be provided per institution.

With the selection made that included a women’s university, education minister Keiko Nagaoka said at a press conference that it is important to build a society where women having expertise in science can play active roles.

Over 10 years, an approximate total of 250 public and private universities will be chosen to receive aid for faculty reorganization in order to boost science education.  About 60 institutions, also including national universities and technical colleges will be granted financial assistance to strengthen their functions for nurturing highly skilled digital and other personnel.
