What you should know about the International Mathematical Olympiad 2023

The 64th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), a highly prestigious and competitive mathematical competition attracting the best high school  mathematicians worldwide, will be held in Chiba, Japan from July 2 to 13.
The event this year will be hosted by the Mathematical Olympiad Foundation of Japan and co-hosted by the Japan Science and Technology Agency.
The first Olympiad happened in 1959 and was held in Romania. The event has continued since, as an international platform where students from all over the world can showcase their mathematical skills and knowledge.
WHO CAN JOIN?
The IMO is open to all students below the age of 20 on July 31st of the current year. Students from any country can participate in the IMO as long as they meet the following eligibility criteria.
  • Age: The student must be born on or after July 1st, 2004, and must not be older than 19 years of age on July 31st.
  • Education: The student must be enrolled in a secondary school or college and not have completed his/her schooling before the year of the IMO competition.
  • Nationality: The student must be a citizen or permanent resident of the country he/she represents and have the nationality of that country.
  • Selection: The student must be selected by the National Mathematical Olympiad (NMO) organisation of his/her country based on his/her performance in the national-level mathematics competition.
  • Participation: Each country is allowed to send a team of six students to participate in the IMO competition. However, a country may be permitted to send fewer than six students in exceptional cases.
The competition now attracts students from over 100 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania.
