The Japanese education ministry’s guidelines on the use of generative artificial intelligence in elementary, junior high and high schools will call for limited use of AI tools for the time being, according to media reports Tuesday. Generative artificial intelligence (Generative AI) means use of AI tools such as text, images, music, audio, videos and codes to create new content.

In July, Japan’s education ministry will be releasing guidelines urging schools to proceed with caution in developing students’ ability to utilize these generative AI tools, pointing out the impacts of misinformation and leakage of personal information.

The guidelines include emphasis on ‘appropriateness’ – limiting use of such tools in schools where sufficient measures are taken.

Examples of ‘inappropriate’ use of generative AI tools will be listed in the guidelines to include: for periodic tests; for submitting essays entirely generated by the tools; for letting students use the tools from the beginning when writing poems; for research on certain topics before using textbooks; and for assessing student learning.
