Japan: No need for a driver’s license to use an e-kick scooter from July

By on June 26, 2023

Japan is set to relax the road rules on electric kick scooters starting July 1st allowing people aged 16 or older to use them without a driver’s license.

Electric scooter sharing businesses and others welcome the move, but concerns were raised over an increase in riders who have little to zero knowledge of traffic rules.

Electric kick scooters, mounted with motors, move forward without the need to continuously kick the ground.

The vehicles began to multiply in Japan from around 2021 predominantly used by people in their 20s and 30s, many of them, for commuting.

In Japan, e-kick scooters can run on roadways as a rule of thumb. Bicycle lanes are allowed only if they flash a green light and don’t go past the 6-kilometer per-hour-or-less rule.
