Japan digitalizes divorce procedures

By on June 8, 2023

Since the pandemic, a lot of things have slowly been going digital in Japan – from job interviews to visa renewals — and now even divorce is hopping on the bandwagon.

Getting divorced puts a couple in an emotionally vulnerable place. The required paperwork  and overwhelming procedures with lots of legal jargon – not to mention the language barrier, could especially be stressful for foreigners.

On Tuesday, Japan approved a set of bills that will digitalize civil procedures that do not involve lawsuits: divorce mediation and bankruptcy applications.

The new law will allow divorcing couples or proxies to submit required application online instead of the current practice of mailing out documents to courts. This makes submission via online mandatory for lawyers and other proxies.

Documents related to the division of assets will also be digitized for the court’s safekeeping even they were submitted as hard copies. This will allow concerned parties to view them online.
