If taking a train trip around Japan with children and visiting relatives fills you with trepidation, you’re not alone.

When JR Lines announced its most aggressive price hike to happen from October this year, foreign travelers were disappointed.

“We are a family of 5. The reason we always use Japan Rail Pass for seven days (currently set at 29,650 yen) is the savings we get from the offer,” says Richard.

As railway companies recover from train disruption caused by Covid, families face a huge rise in JR Rail pass’ (7-day) price to 50,000 yen.  Companies have been dealing with rising expenses and have chosen to pass on those costs to consumers.

According to a recent poll conducted by Export Japan, a multimedia company, 70% of foreigners are dissatisfied with JR Rail pass’s prohibitive price increase that they “will not use it anymore.”

Only a paltry 12% of the people polled answered they would use the pass even after the price increase.

Dan Mankowski reacting to the steep price increase, says, “We will have to put off our (family) travel plans for now.”

“This rise in rail fares will surely hit families and tourists making it harder for regions in Japan to bounce back.”
