Is a pair of Xiaomi’s new Buds4 pro any good?

By on March 10, 2023

Let’s talk about Xiaomi’s newly released flagship model Buds 4 Pro wireless earphones that retails at 26,800 yen.

SOUND QUALITY

The Hi-Res audio streaming uses Sony’s LDAC codec supported with up to 990 kbps, 96 kHz/24-bit so in terms of sound experience, it is generally faultless. The sound is nicely balanced, and bass notes are tight and crisp.

THE COOL FEATURE

Perhaps, the coolest feature of the Xiaomi Buds 4 Pro is its active noise cancellation that reduces ambient noise by up to 99.6% and a noise canceling depth of up to 48dB which can be pretty close to Apple’s AirPods Pro or Samsung’s Galaxy Buds 2 Pro.

The Beijing-based designer and manufacturer of consumer electronics and software has put bells and whistles to its Buds4 Pro – equipping it with a 360° spatial audio function, a Xioami-owned technology. What this means is that the ANC function identifies ambient noise in the environment and depending on the noise level, automatically switches between 3 noise cancellation settings and 6 manual noise canceling modes. Noise during calls are then reduced with help from its AI noise-canceling technology and voice pattern sensor on 3 microphones.

The ANC sometimes turn off by itself while playing music. The fix: Take the buds off and then put them back. There are also times the mics fail to sense my voice. The other day, when I picked up my daughter from school where the noise was moderately loud, I noticed a brief interruption. Although it works smoothly most of the time, it can be rather annoying.

BATTERY

The battery lasts up to 9 hours with earphones use alone, up to 38 hours with the charging case (both with ANC off). It maybe too short for those traveling on long-haul flights but these earbuds support quick full charging in 30 minutes just by putting them in the case. A 30-minute charge allows up to 3 hours of music playback with 5 minutes of charging. The Bluetooth version is 5.3, and the codec supports SBC/AAC/LDAC. Near the bottom of the case is a LED indicator showing the battery level and charging progress. There’s also a pairing button next to the USB-C connector.

THE FIT

Not all ears are created equal. Xiaomi can intelligently detect whether the tips are the right fit for your type of ear shape. The Buds4 pro are soft to the touch and come in three sizes for that purpose.

THE LOOK

The pair of earbuds are available in two swanky colors (matte finish) and classy design: gold star and space black. I went with the gold for a reason. The lid’s glossy finish makes grease and  specks of dirt conspicuous with black.

The casing design comes with strong magnets to keep the earphones in place.
