The iconic moral story for children brought to life on film by Mexican Director Guillermo del Toro more than 80 years after the Disney classic first hit theaters, swept a number of awards including the Golden Globe and the top honor at the animation industry’s Annie Awards.

This is Guillermo del Toro’s first win in the Animated Feature category which brings his total Oscar wins to three. “Animation is cinema,” he said in a speech as he receives the recognition. “Animation is not a genre and animation is ready to be taken to the next step. We are all ready for it. Please help us keep animation in the conversation.”

It is the first nomination and win for director Mark Gustafson and producers Alex Buckley and Gary Ungar. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio also scored Netflix its first trophy in the Best Animated Feature Oscar category.

Unlike the Disney classic adaptation, del Toro’s version set in 1930s Italy had themes of  fascism, war and grief. Its remarkable use of stop-motion animation won over Academy voters.

“It’s important that we keep this alive as an industry and an art form,” del Toro continued. “I have right now two scholarships active for filmmakers, and it is my desire and my commitment now to finance a stop-motion class in Mexico.”
