Heatherwick Studio: Building soulfulness

By on January 11, 2023

The Mori Art Museum will showcase twenty-eight of London-based Heatherwick Studio’s key projects for 11 weeks from March 17.

The exhibit will reveal the creative playful processes and curiosity in each of the projects which, according to the design team, are the ‘results of  a trial-and-error process’: familiar structures and functions reassessed, new ideas realized from six different viewpoints: Coming Together; Connecting with Everyone; Experiencing Sculptural Space; Feeling Nature in Urban Space; Bringing Memories to the Future; and Playing and Using.

It will explore the type of architecture that brings with it the sort of kindness, beauty, intellectual stimulation and empathy that moves the human heart.

For 28 years, Heatherwick Studio has been responsible for  innovative projects in many cities including New York, Singapore, Shanghai, and Hong Kong – evolving to become one of the most sought-after design teams in the world.

British Founder Thomas Heatherwick, the man behind Heatherwick Studio, works with a team of around 200 architects and designers with an extensive range of design disciplines including architecture, engineering, transport and urban planning to furniture, sculpture and product design.

Thomas says, “Heatherwick Studio, unlike many architecture practices, owns no fixed style and its focus is on problem-solving.”

“It is more like solving a crime. The answer is there, and your job is to find it. So we go off and do bits of research that essentially eliminate suspects from the enquiry. And then you follow up leads and gradually narrow down the potential solutions.”

“Ultimately, what you’re left with is the answer.”
