New York City’s Scarpetta Italian restaurant is coming to Tokyo.

Twenty plus years ago, French restaurants dominated the European dining scene in Tokyo.

But now, the title has gradually shifted to Italian restaurants.

It’s amazing how you can go to any place in Tokyo and not find an Italian restaurant close by. According to Townpage, there are as many as 1,554 Italian restaurants registered in Tokyo alone –  and 8,250 all over Japan. That means there is an Italian restaurant for every 9 people in Tokyo.

Yet, for many people in the restaurant business, the lure of the mecca for foodies seems unstoppable.

Scarpetta, a famous Italian restaurant on Madison street in New York city has announced that it will be opening in Tokyo on October 3, 2022. It will be located at the Tokyo World Gate  directly connected to the Kamiyacho station. The new Tokyo location brings the number of its partner restaurants at famous hotels in New York and London, to 7.

The lashings of crusty bread that comes with a meal at Italian restaurants is obviously for eating. The other purpose is for doing a ‘scarpetta’.  Scarpetta means neatly gathering all the sauce on your plate with a piece of bread. For Italians, not only is it good manners to leave behind a clean plate, it is also an unspoken gesture of appreciation for a good meal. It is a fundamental part of an Italian’s cultural identity.

When it first opened in 2008, Scarpetta got a 3-star rating from the New York Times. Today, it continues to be a popular dining place of celebrities and New York elites.

By introducing New York-style modern Italian cuisine and fine dining, it hopes to turn it into a venue for social gathering by businessmen and the neighboring community.
