The 17-day Beijing Games ended Sunday night with Japan celebrating record medal hauls.

Thomas Bach, IOC president declared the end of the games praising the athletes for their spirit of solidarity and peace.

“We share this Olympic spirit with all the athletes who, because of the pandemic, could not make their dream come true,” he said. “But you belong and you will always belong to the Olympic community.”

Japan was filled with joy over its record Winter Olympic medal haul winning its last silver in Sunday’s final by the Japanese women’s curling team.

This brings Japan’s total medal count to 18: three golds, six silvers and nine bronzes, exceeding the previous record of 13 medals won at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics in South Korea. Of the 18 medals, four were garnered by speed skater Miho Takagi, captain of the Japanese athletes in Beijing.

Japan ranked sixth in terms of the total medals won.
