Ryusuke Hamaguchi receives four Oscar nominations for ‘Drive My Car’

Japanese film director Ryusuke Hamaguchi has carved a name for himself after receiving his first Academy Awards nominations yesterday for his latest film ‘Drive My Car’. The ceremonies will be held on March 27 of this year.

The nominations for best picture, best director, best screenplay adaption and for best international feature marks the very first nomination ever received for a Japan-produced film.

Hamaguchi’s  signature films reveal his general interest in  psychology, social construct and the awkwardness of situations people find themselves in as a result of building walls as opposed to tearing them down. This earned him a reputation as one of Japan’s most observant film makers on the human psyche.

‘Drive My Car’ for which he received four prestigious nominations, is one such example. Based on a short story by Japanese author Haruki Murakami, the film explores the relationship between a closed-off theatre director reeling from the unexpected death of his wife and a woman he hired to be his driver.

At last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Hamaguchi and screenwriter Takamasa Oe won the ‘Best Screenplay Award’ for the same film.

Drive My Car has garnered four other awards from the U.S. National Society of Film Critics, making it the first Japanese film in 62 years to be honoured with a Golden Globe award for best film in the non-English language category.
