Three years ago, 23-year old Desirée Vila Bargiela from Spain started training as a Paralympic athlete after losing her right leg from a very bad fall during training.

Despite her condition, she emerged as Spain’s champion with record-breaking scores: 100 meters (18.65), 60 meters (11.65) and long jump (3.46). She finished eighth in long jump (3.60) at the Adapted Athletics World Championship.

Her record-breaking 4.17-meter jump at the Paralympic Meeting in Basauri has qualified her to compete in the upcoming Paralympics in Tokyo.

“Getting a place in the Tokyo Paralympic Games is a dream come true,” says Vila who is aiming for more medals.
