Games that Japanese children play at home.

Three months of school closure and stay home measures feel like six months for most parents who are attached to pre-pandemic routines.

With children out of school, many parents did not expect to be in the driver’s seat in terms of keeping their kids healthy, entertained while learning for hours on end.

Parks are closed and it takes some creativity to design activities where children feel like being outdoors while playing indoors. Thankfully, many Japanese parents did not disappoint. We take a peek at Japanese homes to see what families are doing to keep the fun going.

Strawberry picking inside the house is just as fun as it is outdoors.

Hosting a picnic outdoors where cooking is done by children.

One parent draws a McDonald’s menu as props for children to play store as a storekeeper.  Pretend play allows siblings to join in as customers to encourage individual ideas to be expressed.

Catch it if you can.  Japanese children love the crane game mostly played at matsuris.

Outdoor camping in the comfort of their veranda.

Sushi making at home

A child goes into a laundry basket while dad brings the thrill of the virtual roller coaster ride into their living room through YouTube videos  while younger sibling waits for his turn. The child giggles his way around the tracks while dad holds the basket and synchronizes movement up and down in time with the bumps. What a fun way to get kids to experience indoor thrill.

Forget movie theatres. Dim the lights and you can have one right at home with help from a movie projector.

If you’re a sports fan, it’s not hard to notice that the dad in the photo above is none other than Koji Nakata, one of Japan’s best left-footed midfielder who played for the  2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cup. Here, he is seen teaching his kids how to create the perfect udon noodles. Why not? Afterall, Nakata was raised in Otsu, Shiga prefecture, home to Japan’s century-old udon shop called Noppei Udon Momijiya.
