Will Smith plays the Genie in 2019’s Aladdin

By on May 22, 2019

The comedically eccentric big blue genie with the omnipotent power to grant wishes, voiced by the late Robin Williams in the original animated Disney adventure, does a remake to give Disney fans a fresh live action version of “Aladdin”.  This time, it will be played by no less than Will Smith.  How he will engage audience the same way Robin Williams’ iconic and irreplaceable voice and performance did, is something to watch.

“What Robin Williams did with this character – he just didn’t leave a lot of room to add to the genie. So I started off fearful but then when I got with the music, it just started waking up that fun, childlike, silly part of me,” Smith said. In an interview by Metro, he said that he was “terrified” while playing the character, but found a lane that pays homage to Robin Williams’ performance in the original film, while still making the role his own thing.

Mena Massoud, the Egypt-born Canadian actor plays Aladdin and British actor and singer Naomi Scott of  “The 33” and “Power Rangers” fame, plays the princess of Agrabah, Jasmine.

Whatever imagination and antics veteran actor Will Smith brings to the big screen, will undoubtedly be off-the-charts, creative.

Showing at all major theatres in Japan on June 7.
