The Tokyo restaurant where you can catch your fish and eat it too

By on August 11, 2018

Fishing Restaurant Zauo is one of those only-in-Japan experiences that make a welcome change to the increasingly globalized fare that we find in Tokyo.

Simply put, Zauo is a seafood restaurant that lets you catch your dinner as it swims past your table. Yes, that’s right! The staff will carry your catch away and prepare it in a variety of ways.

Armed with a baited rod, a little patience is required to nab the critters, but when you do, the taste of success is sweet. Of course, you can just order direct from the menu to take the pressure off, but catching it yourself offers a little thrill for the youngsters, and the elders if truth be known, and it is cheaper too.

In the water and surrounding tanks are over 10 different kinds of sea creatures ranging from crispy crustaceans such as spiny crab and lobster to sea bream and the easiest catch, mackerel. A combination of freshly caught and menu-ordered is the way to go. If you don’t have a way with the fish you can cheat; when no one is looking, use the net to scoop a few up (we won’t tell). Zauo is the perfect port of call for when those relatives visit. One of those lost-in-translation experiences that works on all levels.

Branches in Shinjuku, Kameido and Yokohama. Little to no English is spoken, but you will soon get the idea!
