Japan plans to attract foreign talent by expanding industries covered by work visas.

The Japanese government plans to expand the industries where foreign workers with specified skills qualify.

As a result of Japan’s declining birth rate, the proposed change presented at a meeting by the ruling LDP,  aims to fill labor gaps and provide long-term employment to foreign workers.

If cabinet approves the proposal, the current restriction to two sectors will be expanded to cover 11 more including accommodation, agriculture and food service industries.

As of 2019, Japan grants Type 1 visa status to workers with certain skill levels and Type 2 status to highly skilled workers eligible for supervisor jobs.

The proposed change will help Japan best leverage foreign talent to diversify its economy.
