Helmets shortage hits Japan after new law went into effect

By on April 10, 2023

Starting this month, cyclists of all ages are now required to wear a helmet in Japan after the revised Road Traffic Act went into effect.

Although there is no fine for violation, the ordinance currently in force, expects parents or guardians of children younger than 13 to ask them to wear a cycling helmet when riding a bicycle.

As the demand for cycling helmets peaked, Japan is currently experiencing a shortage in supply particularly, the cap-style ones.

Kyosuke Tabuchi, a bicycle shop owner in Tokyo’s Minato Ward says, the demand from female cyclists has increased following the new road rules.
