How intense do you like your matcha ice cream?

I Scream You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream.

We all love to go out for green tea ice cream but deciding where to go requires some arm-twisting.  

We all have different flavor preferences. My husband wants his strong, I want mine mildly bitter, and the kids love theirs creamy and sweet.

After 2 years in Japan, we finally found a place we can all agree on – Nanaya Aoyama.

For the uninitiated, Nanaya specializes in green tea gelato. Its ice cream flavor profile ranges from levels 1 – 7 of matcha intensity (7 being the strongest).

 

Level 1: No different from ice cream sold in cups at convenience stores.

Level 2: Moderate matcha aroma, creamy and sweet.

Level 3: Average consistency, silky and well balanced. Kids (7 and 9) love this!

Level 4: A mature flavour with the slight bitterness of matcha.

Level 5:  Works for my taste buds.

Level 6:  Not for me. Husband says, “just right.”

Level 7: “This is it,” says my husband.

If in doubt, try them all!
