Covid-19 revised guidance: Mandatory masking lifted today throughout Japan but…

By on March 13, 2023

Wearing a mask is now optional throughout Japan leaving the choice of whether to mask or not indoors and outdoors, to the public. Masking indoors was relaxed in May 2022 yet there had been reports that people who don’t wear masks were being harassed.

The revised guidance says individuals should be left to decide freely whether to wear masks, calling for the public to respect each other’s decisions.

It also lists three specific places where masking is recommended: inside crowded trains, buses and medical and elderly care facilities

Those who have cold symptoms and have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, along with people they live with are urged not to go out. Those that need to are asked to wear masks for public safety’s sake.
