Study finds phubbing harms life satisfaction

With the ability of smartphones to fulfill many of the conveniences we enjoy today from e-shopping and paying bills to entertainment and social media, our increasing dependence on our devices has affected our focus on relationships, giving rise to partner phubbing.  Partner ‘Phubbing’ (a portmanteau of ‘phone’ and ‘snubbing’) means focusing on one’s mobile phone during a conversation instead of paying attention to face-to-face interaction with partner.

An online study in Turkey recently published in the Sage Journal, suggests that people ignored by their partners who are focussed on their phone, are less satisfied with their relationship and sees its quality as low.

The aptly titled study, “The Relationship Between Partner Phubbing and Life Satisfaction: The Mediating Role of Relationship Satisfaction and Perceived Romantic Relationship Quality” authored by Faruk Caner Yam, involved 308 participants: 243 women (78.9%) and 65 men (21.1%).

The overall results showed that the more frequent people were exposed to partner phubbing, the lower they see the quality of their relationship as a couple and were less satisfied with the romantic relationship.

“These results reveal that relationship satisfaction and perceived romantic relationship quality decrease in individuals who are exposed to partner phubbing behaviors, and that decreased relationship satisfaction and romantic relationship quality harm life satisfaction,” Yam concludes.
