My 3-year old’s favorite bread comes in a can.

In Tokyo where people love their bread fresh and fluffy, you’re not likely to see canned bread in your local bread store, much less at a convenience store.

But, as odd as it sounds, a number of online stores actually do sell them.

At the height of the pandemic when movement was very much restrained in Tokyo, many canned bread manufacturers popped out of the blue. We found one on Amazon and ordered a box of 24 canned bread out of curiosity.

The brand ‘Bakery’ comes in these flavors: Milk, Coffee, Caramel, Brown sugar,  Eggless loaf, Orange, Strawberry, Chocolate and Melon.

The concept of canning bread isn’t exactly new. The colonial New Englanders started it in the 1800s or just about the same period when canned meat and vegetables were introduced to the world.

While the idea of eating bread from an easy-open tin can may not look particularly appetizing to many, it is not without advantages.

Japan-made Bakery brand has a shelf-life of 5 years which should be suitable for use in emergencies as well as family out-of-town activities. The company website writes that their bread is ‘aged, fermented and baked in special hygienic cans’ so it is safe to eat straight out of the can.

The product label recommends popping bread into a 500-watt microwave oven (for 20 secs) for maximum goodness.

Unlike the dry and crumbly ones my 3-year old once tasted back home and didn’t enjoy, this mildly sweet Brown Sugar bread when heated becomes fluffy and moist. She loves it so much – she could snack on two cans in one sitting!

This canned flavored bread is one of those foods best eaten alone without any spreads or dips.
