Do you live in an aging wooden house in Tokyo? Expect to get a seismic circuit breaker from the government.

Many wooden houses in the eastern and southern parts of Tokyo often built so close to each other are considered vulnerable to fires after an earthquake.

The roads in between are also too narrow for fire engines and ambulance to enter in the event of fire.

According to a metropolitan government projection revised last year, a big quake in Tokyo could potentially cause fires, damage 120,000 buildings and claim 2,500 lives – with special attention to Adachi, Edogawa and Ota wards.

The threat of damage has prompted the Tokyo metropolitan government to take action and provide a seismic circuit breaker to local residents who live in vulnerable areas packed with aging wooden houses. What the device does is it automatically cuts off power when a major quake occurs. The number of households that need the device is estimated to be 320,000.
