“This year’s top buzzword in kanji is “shiawase” or happiness.

The kanji for “happiness” topped the surveys conducted in 2018, 2019, and 2020 except for 2021.

The year 2022 for one respondent was ‘pure joy’. “After giving birth this year, it dawned on me that my bundle of joy is more important and irreplaceable than myself.”

Money and suffering were not trending kanjis in past years. Moms and dads describe 2022 however as one marked by ‘suffering’ and ‘financial woes’.

One self-employed parent said, “For me, it was a year of thinking about money – such as inflation, tax hikes and bankruptcy due to Corona.” It was difficult for me to work,” she added.

The pandemic has put a strain on her finances due to economic uncertainty and rising prices.
