Jiji press reports today that families can get an additional 80,000 yen childbirth allowance as broadly approved by Japan’s health ministry subcommittee.

This raises the total amount of childbirth allowance from 420,000 yen to 500,000 yen per baby to take effect from the start of Japan’s fiscal year 2023 in April.

The increase aimed at enhancing Japan’s support programs for child-rearing households already burdened by high medical costs caused by the country’s aging population, will be included in a draft budget for fiscal year 2023.

In order to secure additional funding, the ministry plans to introduce from fiscal year 2024, an insurance premium hike. People aged 75 or over with annual incomes of 10M yen and up will be asked to pay 800,000 yen instead of the current 660,000 yen to fund 7 percent of the cost over two years from April 2024.
