World famous Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake died of liver cell cancer at a Tokyo hospital on Friday at the age of 84.

The internationally acclaimed brand creator, whose real name was Kazunaru Miyake, was awarded the Japanese government’s Order of Culture in 2010 and a Legion of Honor award from France in 2016.

A native of the western Japan city of Hiroshima, Miyake moved to France in 1965 to study at a haute couture school in Paris after graduating from Tama Art University in Tokyo.

Inspired by students engaging in debate during the protests in France in May 1968, Miyake focused on making clothes the general public would feel familiar with. He later moved to New York.

In 1970, he founded the Miyake Design Studio in Tokyo.

Issey Miyake introduces his collection at a European fashion show.
