Sayonara plastic utensils and amenities!

By on April 1, 2022

A new law takes effect today in Japan requiring retailers and hotels to cut down on the use of utensils and amenities made from plastic. The law requires businesses that provide 5 tons or more of single-use items to its customers annually to either charge for plastic utensils and amenities, or reward customers for not using them.

The plastic recycling promotion law covers 12 plastic items, including spoons, forks and toothbrushes. The idea is for them to reduce the use of plastic by replacing them with ones made from substitute materials. Some of the businesses affected by the new law are food manufacturers and hotels.

FamilyMart has now put up a notice that it will no longer provide plastic forks to people when they buy food. Customers can ask for wooden chopsticks instead.

FamilyMart estimates a plastic waste savings of 260 tons a year can be achieved for the country through its initiative.
