How to set up your Google Family Link to monitor your children’s online activities.

Google Family Link is a parental control app. The application allows parents to restrict content, see what apps to approve or disapprove, restrict screen times, and websites they can open through the browser. In order to access the app remotely, you will need Google accounts.

With the help of this barebones app, Parents can check all apps their children use or download on the internet. Here’s the website version of the app – https://families.google.com/families/; check it out.

If your child is 13 years old or under, he or she can not create his or her own Google account unless a parent sets up the account using this app. Family Link is not just for children below 13. The app is available on both Google Play for android devices and App Store for iOS devices.

Family Link runs on all Android devices, version 4.4 (or higher), iPhones with iOS 9 or higher as well as Chromebooks running Chrome OS version 71 (or higher). Versions that are not up to date don’t support the latest features.

A question many parents ask is if children can customize the Family Link account as they wish. The answer to that is “No”  if you’ve set up strong and secured passwords.  As an added safety measure though,

• Open the Family Link app, select your child’s profile, and look for an option called “Device Card.”
• Tap “View Settings;” a “App Permissions” option will pop up – click on it.
• Select “Only Parents” in the app permissions section.
