KDDI has shut down its 3G services. What to do?

By on March 31, 2022

If you still have a mobile phone that exclusively connects to 3G networks and you are a KDDI subscriber, your phone will no longer work.

KDDI will terminate its 3G mobile services, affecting subscribers using older gadgets from years ago starting April 1st, 2022. This means if you have a current service agreement with KDDI, that will automatically be cancelled.

In general, smartphones that launched after 2014 like iPhone 6 and flip phones that launched after 2017 should continue to work. If your phone doesn’t say “4G LTE” or “5G” in its status bar when Wi-Fi is off, there’s a good chance it is a 3G phone and will no longer work after KDDI terminates its services.

The users have until the end of June 2022 to resubscribe with no change in their current phone number and email account.  However,  they need to upgrade to newer models if they wish to continue using KDDI as their carrier.

If not, your other option is to sign up with other carriers. Softbank will still be offering 3G until late January 2024 and NTT Docomo until the end of March 2026.
