Face ID now works even with a mask on

By on February 4, 2022

Up until now, the face recognition features on your smartphone may not have worked with a mask on.

But things have just gotten more useful. The beta version of iOS 15.4 delivered in January 2022,  has added the ability to use the face unlock feature while wearing a face mask.

To be able to use the feature, you need an iPhone 12 or later model. Select “Use Face ID With a Mask” on the settings and it will recognize the area around your eyes to authenticate you.

Apple’s iOS 15.4 is still in public beta, which means it is an unfinished beta software where some tweakings could apply before official release. But you can install and test it now.

How to install the iOS 15..4 beta 1

  • Go to Apple’s beta software portal from your phone’s Safari browser and sign in with your Apple ID.
  • Under the “Get Started” subhead, select “Enroll your iOS device” if you haven’t enrolled it already.
  • Once you’ve enrolled, scroll down to a reminder to make sure that you’ve created a backup of your phone’s content in case you need to revert to a previous state.

Apple is not the only one with such technology.  KDDI R & D Laboratories and Fujitsu have announced the results of AI technology that can recognize facial expressions even with masks on. On February 24, 2021,  KDDI Research Institute developed an AI technology that recognizes about 70% of facial expressions with a 90% or higher accuracy even with masks and eyeglasses on.
