Quarantine to be shortened from 10 to 7 Days for close contacts

By on January 28, 2022

Japan’s health ministry is considering shortening the quarantine period for those who had close contact with people infected with the novel coronavirus from the current 10- day rule to 7.

The move comes in response to the current surge in close contact cases from the rapidly spreading omicron variant in the country.

The decision was reached as the omicron variant’s incubation period of around three days, is shorter than other coronavirus strains. The ministry had said that it was extremely rare for the incubation period to exceed 10 days.

Daily COVID-19 infection cases in Japan has tripled since Jan. 14 as the number of close contacts continues to grow rapidly.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at the Budget Committee of the House of Representatives meeting, that the country is considering shortening the quarantine period.
