Japan makes one terrific electric bike for you and your pet

When it comes to having a fun activity with pets, nothing beats exercise, sunshine and fresh air.

In general, most pet owners walk their dogs an average of 3,000 kms a year for many years. However, while some breeds can take long walks, others can not handle anything more than a 10-minute walk.  In fact, a more-than-an-hour of leisure walk for our canine friends can set them up for injuries. Other pet owners who have blind or arthritic dogs will want them to get sunshine and more fresh air.

Restlogic, a company based in Hokkaido took those issues seriously and came up with MOPET, a new smallish E-bike with a built-in cage for pets.

Pre-order sales of MOPET has started on crowd-funding site Makuake on November 8th.

People who live at a distance from dog parks but do not have cars will find MOPET a practical mobility choice. However, its size and the absence of a swiveling front wheel can lead to butt soreness, especially if you’re on a long ride.

The boarding section has a dimension of 45 cm w x 33 cm h x 21 cm d enough to comfortably fit a small or medium size pet. The cage is installed at the center of the bike which makes checking on your dog easy while on the road. The pet compartment comes with a stopper for security and when not being used by your canine friend, doubles as a space for bags or groceries.

Equipped with a turn signal, side mirror, horn, brake light, license plate light, license plate holder, reflector, speedometer, Mopet is Traffic Act-compliant. It is categorized in Japan as a Class 1 motorized bicycle. This means you will need a liability insurance to ride a Mopet.

Its three lithium-ion battery powers (10A / 15A / 20A) for different cruising ranges are detachable for charging on any household outlet. (The 10Ah is for 20-30km, 15Ah for 30-40km and the 20Ah for 50-60km range.)

The greatest advantage of Mopet over regular trailers is its foldability. Although many trailers these days fold up and have detachable wheels, they are wider in size and take up so much storage space. Well, this isn’t the case for Mopet that easily loads on to the trunk of a car for easy transport. When folded, the size shrinks approximately to half –  107 cm w x 107 cm h x 33 cm d. For security purposes, it comes with an anti-theft alarm when vibration is detected.

If you want to show support for this precious two-wheeler that comes in white and pink by ordering one, you can do so until January 30, 2022 (Sunday) via its crowdfunding site Makuake (only in Japanese). Delivery is scheduled to be completed by the end of May 2022. Around 66 people have done so since the site was opened on Nov. 8, 2021.
