Say goodbye to cancellation fees when you switch carriers.

By on October 27, 2021

This month, NTT Docomo Inc. becomes the first among Japan’s three major telecom carriers to stop its decades-long practice of charging subscribers a cancellation fee. As a common business practice by telecom carriers, a one-off cancellation fee is charged when a subscriber switches carriers or stop his subscription.

As the government of Japan takes a hard line stance on fair competition, it has requested telecom carriers last year to further lower mobile subscription costs.

On Tuesday, SoftBank Corporation has announced it will stop collecting penalties from users who cancel their subscription before the lock-in term expires. This will take effect at the end of January 2022.

Meanwhile, KDDI Corp. (AU) is planning to follow suit by the end of March 2022.
