Unmasked nursery teachers send 65 infected kids to the hospital.

Asahi News reported today that 65 children and 14 adults at Jyozan nursery school in Kumamoto’s Nishi ward,  tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Although the teaching staff were advised to wear masks, they were not strictly required to do so.

The unmasked teaching staff  has sparked concern among parents who reported the matter to the Nishi ward between August 2020 and May 2021.

“It’s important (for staff) to show their facial expressions to children for the sake of their development,” a nursery school official told the official in defense, during the investigation.

Despite having been warned by city officials to wear mask at all times, reports of a series of infections at the school were received again on Aug. 24.

On Aug. 31, the city office made a site visit to the school to investigate what was causing the spread.

The officials found out a number of the teaching staff were not wearing masks and some reported to work even if they were feeling ill. The investigation also revealed  windows where shut when it rains, preventing proper room ventilation.

The city reiterated that staff strictly follow health safety protocols.

Some doctors are seeing more critically ill children than they have at any previous point of the pandemic and the highly contagious Delta variant is likely to blame.

All parents should remain alert to and informed about conditions, including community transmission and report to the city officials if you see that infection prevention and control measures at the school aren’t sufficient.
