Valve releases “Steam Deck” Handheld Gaming PC

By on July 16, 2021

Valve which operates the game distribution service “Steam,” announced today the release of a handheld gaming PC “Steam Deck” similar to the Nintendo Switch.

Before Steam Deck, games purchased on Steam were only for use in personal computers powerful enough to run them. Although Steam Deck shares the same architecture as PS5 and Xbox Series X, its overall GPU performance is at 1.6 teraflops (tflops), equivalent to PS4. It has 16 gigabytes of RAM and graphics card that would run any game you have previously bought on Steam. By comparison, the PS5’s GPU is at 10.3 tflops and the Xbox Series X at 12.1.

The Steam Deck which appears slightly bigger than the Nintendo Switch, is a small PC. Think of it like a PDA in the 90s.  It comes complete with a trackpad, face buttons, thumbsticks, a built-in microphone, and a gyroscope for motion controls. The 7-inch 60Hz touchscreen will have a 1280 x 800 resolution. The handheld pc connects to a dock and can be hooked up to a monitor for regular PC tasks. However, performance slows down when connected to displays with higher resolution.

Steam Deck is scheduled to ship in December 2021 and will be available in the US, UK, Canada and EU starting December 16. The selling price in the US starts from $ 399 (about 44,000 yen).

The device will launch in other regions in 2022.
