Wi-Fi hotspot bug permanently disables iPhone’s wireless functionality

By on July 6, 2021

A security researcher based in Denmark, Carl Schou discovered a bug recently  that can break your iPhone’s ability to connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Once you join a WI-FI hotspot with the SSID name containing “%” , it will permanently break your iPhone’s wireless connectivity function.  The bug would render your iPhone unable to connect wirelessly, even if it is rebooted or the WiFi hotspot is renamed.

Not only will the bug break your iPhone, it could also be exploited by hackers.

The researcher also explained that the “%” symbol telling the software to use a “referenced string” that doesn’t actually exist could be what’s causing the code to crash and disable the wireless function.

Until the patch is made available, iPhone users should avoid connecting to hotspots with such SSID names.
