Headphones-only homestyle theater opens in Daikanyama

Not everyone have collaborative spaces with comfy sofas and luxury home theaters that we often see the rich flaunt on Instagram. But if you are one of those that don’t, here’s an option.

Theater Guild in Daikanyama is a “Silent Theater” the first-of-its kind headphones-only theater developed for small audiences. Wireless headphones provided allow you to adjust the sound volume according to your  preference.

Large comfy sofas are lined up in an open space-style living room where people can feel  just like they are watching movies at home.

The man behind the concept is Sotaro Igarashi, the president of Theater Guild who lived in Paris as a child. His childhood’s viewing experience, he says, “had been impacted by the cozy feel of a theater on the first floor of my apartment.”

Bringing the same concept to Tokyo, the people can walk into the theater after they take their shoes off at the entryway.  A huge 3 x 5 meter custom-made 4K LED screen greets you as you walk in the door.

There are sofas and chairs of various sizes and the audience can choose to sit wherever they wish to.

Unlike traditional movie theaters, windows at Theater’s Guild’s  hall remain open during screening for optimum ventilation.

Six films that are now showing include  “A Ghost Story” and “Love Exposure”. The number of seats is 40 but due to health protocols, that will be limited to 10 seats at a given screening time.

Price starts at 2500 yen per person, and screening hours are from 10 am to 9 pm. You need to register as a member (for free) to be able to purchase tickets. https://theaterguild.co/
