Child Abuse and Domestic Violence cases in Japan hit record high

Children all over the world have been suffering some of the ripple effects of the pandemic, threatening a collapse in family dynamics.

Today, a new report by Japan’s National Police Agency provides startling new evidence that the actual number of Child Abuse and Domestic Violence victims in Japan is a lot more than what our newsfeeds say.

Japan’s National Police Agency data has revealed the staggering number of  suspected domestic violence and child abuse cases in 2020.

Last year alone, the Japanese police had received 82,641 consultations related to domestic violence, an increase by 0.5 percent from 2019 data.

The number of suspected victims involving minors 17-year-old and below who were referred by police to child consultation centers, rose by 8.9 percent (106,960).

Seventy percent or 78,355 suspected victims had suffered psychological abuse from seeing other family members abused in front of them while 19,452 others were subjected to physical abuse.

The data includes 8,858 neglected children and 295 sexually abused. The Police took action on 2,131 of the child abuse cases.
